Accidentally stumbling upon the tribe, which had never seen a white man, Schneebaum found himself accepted by, then willingly inducted into, the group. Learning their language and culture, he realized that their way of life included no place for “the individual”; the concept was literally foreign, unknown to them. The Akaramas did nothing independently, working, playing, hunting, and eating together in small sets of same-sexed intimates. Indeed, they even slept together, piled into bundles for warmth and comfort, and reportedly engaged in communal acts of cannibalism and homosexuality.

As close and comradely as they were, however, when death claimed members of the tribe, their absence went unmentioned, seemingly unnoticed. Despite his total acceptance into the tribe, when Schneebaum decided to leave the Akaramas, he was convinced that they would not miss him; they wouldn’t even notice that he was gone. According to Schneebaum’s account, the Akaramas hardly acknowledged separate individuals; each member was fully—and only—a part of the collectivity. The group was the paramount subjectivity; there were no individualized selves to speak of. The self that Schneebaum brought with him into the jungle was socially dissolved as he lived with the tribe, all but obliterating the distinct “me” that Schneebaum had been previously. This ultimately terrified him and, finding it too difficult to practice Akarama subjectivity, he abruptly walked out of the jungle, leaving Akarama life behind as he retrieved his Western sense of individuality.” % einde citaat %
